Are You a Good Candidate for Gastric Sleeve Plication Surgery?

At Tijuana Bariatric Center, we tailor each procedure to the individual’s needs, goals, and preferences. Below we will go over the basics of gastric sleeve plication and how the procedure works. We will then delve into candidacy for the surgery and help determine who may benefit most from this innovative approach.

What is Gastric Sleeve Plication?

Gastric sleeve plication is a type of weight loss procedure that reduces the size of the stomach. During this procedure, a bariatric surgeon creates a fold or a series of folds in the patient's stomach. These folds on the stomach are then carefully sutured and sewn. After gastric sleeve plication, patients feel full sooner and are able to reduce their average caloric consumption throughout the day. Gastric sleeve plication is similar to a sleeve gastrectomy (removal of part of the stomach to make it smaller) and a banding procedure (cinching part of the stomach off with a silicone band).

I had a VSG (Vertical Sleeve) with Dr. Garcia. I was very satisfied with my experience and although I'm only 10 days post-op, so I can't speak to long-term results, I do feel that the procedure was done safely and my side effects have been very minimal. At the hospital, I received first-rate service from the nurses, especially pre-op. Dr. Garcia has an excellent bedside manner and is a very competent surgeon. Dr. Luna, the in-patient doctor, is fantastic and very attentive. I was an in-patient in a U.S. hospital about 7 years ago and my care level was crap compared to what I received in Tijuana. The Marriott is a wonderful hotel and the chicken broth is surprisingly delicious. I had a great experience with Dr. Garcia, I hope you do too.

Ideal BMI for Gastric Sleeve Plication

Most patients who are good candidates for sleeve plication have a BMI of 30 to 40. This places them in the moderately obese to severely obese range. If a person has a BMI of 40 or higher, a gastric sleeve plication may not be ideal for them. This issue will need to be carefully considered on a case-by-case basis to ensure the safety of the patient and the effectiveness of the weight loss procedure.

Understanding the Risks and Benefits

Patients considering any sort of weight loss procedure must have a good understanding of the risks and benefits that are involved in the process. Well-informed patients are more likely to follow pre-op and post-op instructions to prevent complications. In addition, weighing the pros and cons in this way allows patients to have realistic expectations about the nature of the surgery and the overall results.

Commitment to Improving Overall Lifestyle

The key to success with bariatric surgery is adopting an attitude of transformation. Ideal candidates are patients who are willing to change their lives for the better. That means eating right, exercising more, and avoiding unhealthy activities such as smoking.

Weight loss procedures such as gastric sleeve plication are just the first big step along a lifelong journey. Patients must be serious and brave about this bold adventure that they are going on and the better world that awaits them.
